Werder Bremen have today announced that they have re-signed Lennart Thy from FC St. Pauli, with the striker to join in the summer after his current contract expires.

Thy rejected the chance to extend his stay with the 2. Bundesliga side, instead choosing to return to the team who he played for between 2007 and 2012 before leaving to join St. Pauli.

After appearing 101 times for Freibeuter der Liga, the 23-year-old will now move back to his old club later this year, signing a contract that will run until 2019.

Clubs have their say

The forward has signed a three-year deal with Bremen and the club's general manager, Thomas Eichin, spoke on the signing, saying: "We are really pleased to have been able to convince Lennart Thy to return to Werder. He's a very interesting player who fits in perfectly here."

St. Pauli's general manager, Thomas Meggle, also spoke on the departure of Lennart, saying: "We would have liked to have kept hold of Lennart, but of course we respect his decision. Unfortunately he turned our offer and made a different choice. We have to accept that."

Thy scored 16 times in his 101 games for St. Pauli, including seven this season. His most memorable performance for the 2. Bundesliga club came in a 4-0 win over Fortuna Dusseldorf, with him netting all four.

Return to the second division?

The future of Bremen in the first division remains in doubt though and there is the possiblity of Thy finding himself back in the second-tier of German football due to his former, and soon to be current, team languishing in 16th in the Bundesliga as a firm relegation contender.

Thy, however, will be hoping for a better spell with Werder Bremen this time around, having left the club to seek more first-team opportunities in 2012. Now, at the age of 23, he has developed into a much better player and Die Werderaner will be pleased with the signing as a result.
