As we sit in the mid-season break for the FA Women's Super League, it's time to look back at the first half of Yeovil Town’s season

Strong start

Before the season started, many would have tipped Yeovil for promotion. The Somerset club have been consistent at the top end of the table in both previous WSL 2 seasons and, seven games, in they look to be in a fantastic position to challenge for promotion - sat at the summit.

In the last two years, manager Jamie Sherwood might have been left to rue a complete sharpness to the team. Although strong in the league, they struggled to go toe-to-toe with the better sides who consistently finished above them. This season, however, Yeovil look to be setting the pace that everyone else has to keep time with.

Their season started brightly, with them claiming an FA Cup win over west-country rivals Bristol City, before they fell to a defeat in the round of 16 at the hands of Sunderland at their new Huish Park home.

When the league kicked-off three days later, Yeovil were once again pitted against their derby rivals, Bristol; the Vixens reaping the spoils after a comprehensive first half – although the Lady Glovers rallied in the second-half it was too little too late. Because of the stop-start nature of the league, Yeovil weren’t back in action until almost four weeks later, once again on the road, but returning back to Somerset with all three points after a less than perfect 2-1 win over Watford.

The games were coming thick and fast for Yeovil as they claimed a further seven points [from nine] that same month, first playing out a frustrating draw against Millwall Lionesses before a comfortable home win over Oxford United. They then enjoyed a commanding 4-0 win in the reverse fixture against the Lionesses.

Another long wait between games followed before two quick-fire fixtures, firstly their third Best in the West derby of the year, but this time Yeovil made no mistakes and hit the ground running to claim a big 2-0 win over Bristol. The Lady Glovers had then barely anytime to catch their breath before Huish Park hosted another WSL2 game, Yeovil meeting Aston Villa for the first time this year. Once again, the hosts started slowly and Villa took a firm 2-0 lead into the break. But it was clinical second-half for Sherwood’s side, who notched four times after the break - with a hat trick from talisman, Sarah Wiltshire - to turn a 0-2 deficit into a 4-2 win.

Strong platform

Yeovil went into the break in pole position, two points clear of Everton and three of Durham, although both sides have a game in hand. Two big games against Everton will give them something to think about later in the season, though there looks to be little to trip the Lady Glovers up.

Competition is fierce in WSL2 this year and no side are to be written off, but if Sherwood can get consistent performances from his team they’ll be a thorn in the side of most and it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which they don’t get promoted – but it’s still early days.
