20-year-old Oliver McBurnie has revealed his delight after starting his first competitive game for Swansea City.

The former Bradford City striker played a part in all of the three Swans goals scored against Peterborough United last night in the EFL Cup, setting Jay Fulton up for the first before bagging two for himself.

Good opportunity

Talking after the game, McBurnie seemed happy to be given the chance to impress by Francesco Guidolin“It was a good opportunity for me tonight."

It Is not the first debut that the Scotland U21 international has impressed on, after scoring a 23-minute hat-trick coming from the bench for Newport County last season.

McBurnie was visibly pleased in his post-match interview, “As debuts go it’s not too bad! Three would have been even better, I was happy to be involved in all of the goals and help the team win".

Stating his case

With two new highly rated and experienced strikers recently brought to the club, McBurnie understands that first team opportunities may be few and far between.

However, he hopes that his show of raw talent against the League One team will give the Swans' boss a selection headache: "All I can do when I'm in training or when I do get the opportunity is try and state my case." He added, "Hopefully I've put a thought in his [Guidolin's] mind tonight when it comes to team selections."

With the EFL Cup commonly used to give fringe or young players an opportunity to show what they have got, the youngster believes it's "imperative" that the team goes as far in the competition as possible to maximise playing time.

Thanking the fans

Following the game McBurnie took to social media to express his happiness over the game that saw Swansea sail through to the third round of the EFL Cup.

McBurnie conveyed how pleased he was for young Scottish team-mate, Jay Fulton, tweeting: "Unreal feeling to make my full debut for Swansea, to score 2 and get an assist, also buzzing for my mate @JayFultonn."

He then went on to thank the Swans faithful and his followers after receiving plenty of plaudits, after his brace and assist: "Also thanks for all the lovely messages I'm reading them all even if I can't reply to them all."
