Sunderland will play host in the second round of the League Cup, where they will entertain League One Shrewsbury Town later this month.

Micky Mellon’s side beat Championship outfit Huddersfield Town 2-1 in the first round of the cup earlier this week. They will now make the trip to the Stadium of Light in the week commencing August 22.

Short history between the two clubs

The second round ties will be played on either Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the 23, 24, and 25 of August. The exact dates have yet to be announced for Sunderland but will be in due course along with ticket details.

This will be the first meeting between the two sides for more than 27 years. Their last encounter came back in 1989 in the second division. The Black Cats ran out 2-1 winners at Roker Park, with Thomas Hauser and Gordon Armstrong the goal scorers.

Overall, Sunderland have won six of the sides' eight meetings, with two draws. Shrewsbury are still yet to beat the Black Cats in competitive football.

Both sides will try to put aside bad memories

The two clubs have only met each other on eight occasions and all of those meetings came while both sides were in the second tier of the Football League between 1979 and 1989. It will be a confidence-booster for Sunderland that Shrewsbury has yet to beat the Black Cats, having won on six occasions and drawn on the other two.

The draw will provoke unhappy memories for Sunderland boss David Moyes, who will be desperate to rectify a previous defeat to the Shrews. The new Sunderland manager was rather embarassingly defeated by Shrewsbury in the third round of the 2003 FA Cup when he was Everton manager.
