Sunderland youngster Rees Greenwood has signed a new deal with the club.

The new contract keeps Greenwood at the Stadium of Light until 2018, with him having impressed with the Black Cats' under-21 side this season in order to clinch the deal.

Having featured 16 times for the table-topping youngsters this season, he has become a key player and an integral part of their so-far-successful campaign, with it coming as no surprise that the club were keen for him to put pen to paper as a result.

Progress on Wearside

Despite being just 19-years-old, Greenwood has quickly made an impact at under-21 level in the Under-21 Premier League for the Black Cats.

He is a versatile footballer, able to play in midfield, out wide or up front, with him described as a 'perfect fit' for the number 10 role by the club's website.

Greenwood only signed a professional deal back in March, along with a trio of under-18 stars, but has now seen that extended even further to keep him at the club for another two years.

The youngster has already trained with the first team this season after impressing at youth level and appears to be making great strides in the right direction as he looks to make his mark on Wearside.

Chance to come under Allardyce?

First team manager Sam Allardyce has opened the door for Academy products to make an impact this season, with Duncan Watmore a regular in the team and Jordan Pickford making his Premier League debut at the weekend.

Other players, such as Lynden Gooch, have made their first team bows this season too, with the manager more than keen to give opportunities to players he believes deserve them.

If Greenwood can continue to move forward at the rate he is, there is no reason why he can't get a look in either, or at least earn himself a loan move elsewhere - as Gooch has this week - to help him develop further.
