Stoke City continued their impressive run as Bojan Krkic's brilliant finish in the 10th minute earned the Potters a hard-fought win over Southampton.

Mark Hughes' side produced an effective away performance to take three points away from Southampton for the first time since 1980 and record their fifth win in their last seven Premier League matches.

Potters produce effective away performance

Once famed for their reliance on results at the Britannia Stadium, Stoke have turned themselves into a formidable force on the road under Mark Hughes.

Twelve of Stoke's 19 points this season have been picked-up away from home and the win over Southampton took their tally from their last four away games to 10 points.

Their run of four successive clean sheets away from home is their best in the top-flight since February 1970. The Potters produced a classic away performance in the second-half, absorbing Southampton's pressure and then threatening on the counter-attack.

Stoke don't score many - but they don't concede many either

There have been just 23 goals scored in Premier League games involving Stoke this season; fewer than any other side. This is because of the fact that Stoke do not score many goals, but they do not concede many either.

A disciplined defensive display

Stoke have kept five clean sheets away from home this season - and four of them have been 1-0 wins.

Their latest win was built on a disciplined defensive display and the Potters never looked like conceding their first away goal since 12 September. Ronald Koeman's side enjoyed long periods of dominance but only tested Jack Butland with one of their 16 efforts on-goal.

Ryan Shawcross may have earned all the plaudits over recent weeks since he returned to the side following back surgery in the summer, but his central defensive partner Philipp Wollscheid was equally impressive against Southampton.

Wollscheid made a crucial interception to deny Shane Long a goalscoring opportunity in the second-half. However, the German defender could have been penalised after tussling with Graziano Pelle in the penalty box, but referee Lee Mason waved away Southampton's claims for a penalty.

Defensive midfielders Glenn Whelan and Charlie Adam at times played as auxiliary defenders, sitting as deep as their centre-backs. Geoff Cameron replaced goalscorer Bojan in the 71st minute in order to shore up things defensively.

Missed chances

The Potters had a number of chances to extend their winning margin and avoid a tense final few minutes. Xherdan Shaqiri, Marko Arnautovic and Ibrahim Afellay all had opportunities to extend Stoke's lead.

Shaqiri had an effort blocked by Maarten Stekelenburg shortly after Bojan gave Stoke an early lead. Less than a minute into the second-half and the Swiss international was guilty of his second miss of the afternoon, firing over from 15 yards out with the goal beckoning.

Arnautovic failed to find the target when clean through in the 77th minute, powering his shot over the crossbar with only the Saints goalkeeper to beat. Substitute Afellay then saw his shot cleared off the line by Ryan Bertrand in the final minutes of the game.

On another day, the Potters might have been made to rue those missed opportunities, but Southampton posed little threat creating only a few clear chances.
