Stoke City took a valuable away point from their game against a spirited Newcastle United side who looked set to amend their recent derby defeat to Sunderland last week.

The Magpies rolled on the pressure in the first half, with a close header from Aleksandar Mitrovic and strikes from Moussa Sissoko expertly saved by the Potters' number one. Steve McClaren's side looked set to score, however the home team went away at half time deadlocked with the Potters thanks to Butland's impressive goalkeeping.

The second half provided more of the same drama as experienced in the first. Butland again proved his worth, saving an Ayoze Perez free kick and pushing Jamaal Lascelles' header over the crossbar to secure a point for his team in front of a crowd of 47,139 on Tyneside.

Butland man of the hour

Butland has solidified his place as first-choice goalkeeper for Stoke after Asmir Begovic's transfer to Chelsea in the summer.

After being the main man in his side's Capital One Cup victory over Chelsea in midweek, saving Eden Hazard's penalty to claim a shoot-out win, Butland carried forth his confidence and impressive form in Saturday's game to secure a vital point in the Premier League for Stoke.

He later told Sky Sports that the game between the Magpies was "hard-fought" as illustrated by Newcastle's 15 shots compared to Stoke's nine. He also suggested that Stoke were "fortunate" with the point as Newcastle commanded possession in a game in which the Potters were "sluggish".

Hughes happy with a point

Mark Hughes was relatively pleased with his side's performance, which sees them remain in 14th place in the table behind Swansea City and Everton. With all three teams on 13 points, Stoke's next match at home to a troubled Chelsea side will be hugely important.

Hughes although was sceptical as to his side's attacking performance today, worrying that his players "didnt look like they wanted to shoot" but was appreciative of Butland's sterling performance in front of goal.

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren was also impressed by Stoke's goalkeeper, commending on his "magnificent performance" which deprived Newcastle of the three points. With Newcastle bouncing back after a humilating sixth defeat in a row in the Tyne-Wear Derby, a revived Magpies side now face Bournemouth away on the South Coast in a game which could see them rise out of the relegation zone.
