Southampton's Victor Wanyama will receive a five-game ban after his latest red card.

With it his third of the season, an extra two games have been added to his suspension which means he will be out of action until March. His next possible action will be against Liverpool on the 19th of next month.

Rash tackles

Wanyama was sent off at the weekend against West Ham United for a challenge on Dimitri Payet in the narrow 1-0 win. This was his third red of the season after previously getting sent-off against Bournemouth and Norwich City; leading to the five match ban.

Wanyama is currently stalling over contract talks as he is hoping that either Arsenal or Tottenham Hotspur renew their interest in him. If he doesn't learn to stop going in and making rash tackles, however, then a potential move to a top four club could be in real jeopardy.

Unlucky - not ill-discplined

The Kenyan's family were present at the game last weekend, which is what will have made his dismissal even more disappointing. Saints boss Ronald Koeman has said he will be speaking to Wanyama about the situation, but the 24 year-old insists that he has been really "unlucky".

Speaking to the Daily National Sport, he explained his words, saying that "all the cards have come because of mistimed tackles, or so the referee thought." None of them have been for "violent conduct, abusive language or such a thing."

However, the reasons for his suspension don't change his feelings towards the ban, with him "so disappointed" that he will not be allowed to play "for a long time."

Massive miss for the Saints

Wanyama's absence is going to prove difficult for the Saints to cope with. Even though the squad is strong, a team is always going to be at a disadvantage when one of their best players is missing.

He will be absent for the visits of Chelsea and Sunderland, whilst he will also be unavailable for the away trips to Swansea City, Bournemouth and Stoke City.

The Saints first choice midfield for the time being will be Oriol Romeu and Jordy Clasie, but the pair haven't played with each other an awful lot. Still, there are other options for Koeman to look at, including academy graduates Harrison Reed and James Ward-Prowse.
