Italian full-back Matteo Darmian is the latest addition to Louis van Gaal's never-ending injury problems this season.

Manchester United's misery shows no signs of ending. Inconsistency in form, unconvincing performances, bad results and an array of injuries have been hitting the Dutch manager's side since the start of the campaign.

The former Torino man is the latest addition to the list of absentees, after dislocating his shoulder by colliding with Wahbi Khazri and landing awkwardly in the 37th minute. He had to be replaced by academy player Donald Love.

Darmian is set to be out for several weeks

The Italy international is facing a serious injury setback and is set to be sidelined for several weeks.

Speaking to MUTV after the defeat at the Stadium of Light, van Gaal has expressed his deep disappointment as he thinks "it is unbelievable" and confirmed he "will be out for several weeks".

Manchester United are now short in full-back options

Injuries to Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young have put the team in serious trouble, as the Dutch manager suggested: "We do not have many more full-backs, not even in the [youth] system. Donald Love has played today at right-back and he did it well."

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has impressed in seven league games so far, making himself a certain starter at left back. Scot Donald Love and Uruguayan Guillermo Varela - who is currently injured - remain Louis van Gaal's two main options to cover the right-back position until injured players recover.

The Red Devils face a busy run of matches in February in the Barclays Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Europa League. It will be a tough ask for van Gaal to rotate his full-back options, given his current list of injuries.
