Whilst the official opening of the transfer window saw a flurry of deals confirmed throughout England on Monday, Liverpool saw a flurry of activity, as the bosman deal to sign Joel Matip went through.

Matip takes number 32

The Reds had come to an agreement to sign the Cameroon defender from Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04 months ago, upon the expiry of his contract, which has finally arrived.

Although the deal had already confirmed by the club, an added chance for social media presence couldn't be missed out on, as they confirmed that Matip was indeed now a Liverpool player, and had taken number 32, meaning Cameron Brannagan will get a new number.

Balotelli back as he can't be sold...

Those two players will be among the squad members that return to Melwood for the first pre-season training session on Saturday morning, with Mario Balotelli another name expected to be amongst those that join up with Jürgen Klopp's squad and staff.

The Reds have failed to find a buyer, as of yet, for Balotelli, who went out on loan to AC Milan last season after a torrid year prior under Brendan Rodgers. They're said to be actively looking to sell the striker, with Klopp of the belief that the Italian wouldn't fit into his high pressing playing style.

Markovic back, bidding not to be sold...

One player who has already returned is Lazar Markovic, back after a loan spell of his own, away at Fenerbache. Sent to Turkey by ex-manager Rodgers after a poor first season on Merseyside, Markovic struggled with injuries and failed to make a substantial impact.

With this in mind, he's returned to Melwood early in a bid to impress Klopp, proving his fitness and looking to get ahead in the race for spots in pre-season fixtures. His place in the pecking order is threatened by the new signing of Sadio Mane, but game opportunities could open up if Jordon Ibe moves away from Anfield.
