Young Liverpool midfielder Jordan Rossiter is set to leave the club at the end of the season, having held discussions over a move to Rangers, the Liverpool Echo have revealed.

Rossiter, 19 years old, is set to bring an end to the relationship he has enjoyed with his boyhood club ever since signing for the club's academy as a young child.

'Next Gerrard' departing after few appearances

Touted by many as the next Steven Gerrard, perhaps just because he was a highly rated, locally born, central midfielder, there will be many disappointed fans as he leaves the club before reaching anywhere near the peak of his undoubted potential.

Rossiter will leave having made just five first team appearances for the club, scoring one goal in that time - striking against Middlesbrough on his debut last season.

He made his Premier League debut under Brendan Rodgers in August of this season, coming on as a substitute away to Arsenal, with a couple of Europa League appearances following.

Injuries have ruined Rossiter's season

However, the England youth international has struggled with a string of injuries that have disrupted his campaign, leaving him well below the likes of Cameron Brannagan and Pedro Chirivella in the young pecking order at Anfield, as each promising player looks to break into Jürgen Klopp's team.

The injuries and lack of appearances left Liverpool reluctant to offer Rossiter a new contract, with his current one expiring this summer, however they eventually did do so - possibly in a bid to secure a compensation fee if he left.

Rangers snap him up for £250,000

They'd have been able to take any club in England to a tribunal over the fee had Rossiter chosen to stay in the country, but by moving abroad - albeit just north of the border - the Reds will be forced to accept the standard fee of £250,000.

Rossiter is said to be looking forward to linking up with Rangers boss Mark Warbuton and playing in front of 50,000 fans each week, as the Gers look forward to their first season back in Scotland's top division.
