Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has refused to rule striker Divock Origi out for the rest of the season, despite confirming that the Belgian does face a period on the sidelines with a 'serious' injury.

Origi suffered a nasty challenge from Everton defender Ramiro Funes Mori during Wednesday's Merseyside Derby, a foul that saw the Argentine sent off, and Origi stretchered off.

With Liverpool fans fearing the worst, it was confirmed on Friday that scans have revealed ankle ligament damage. For most players, that'd keep them out for between four and six weeks, but Klopp is hoping Origi's recovery period could be shorter.

The Belgian could return before the season finishes

When questioned about whether Origi would play again this season in his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday's game against Newcastle United, Klopp admitted that "it's serious", but Liverpool will "try everything" to get him fit.

“The season is not over without taking any risk for the player, that’s how it is," Klopp added. The German also explained that he's been in the game long enough to realise everyone is different so the medical team "don't have to make any general thing" when predicting how long Origi will be out for.

“Why should we say now the season is over when we still believe there can be a few games?" questioned the boss.

Origi was on a roll before injury

Although it's a boost to hear that he could be back before the end of the season, it's still disappointing news for Liverpool fans who have been amazed by the Belgian's recent upturn in performance.

He scored in each leg of the remarkable Europa League triumph over Borussia Dortmund, and had opened the scoring against Everton before being forced off - 10 days after bagging a brace at home to Stoke City.
