Wigan Athletic have had a blow dealt to their season, with the news that midfielder Ben Watson will now be out of action for much of the remainder of the season, with a broken leg picked up in Tuesday’s Championship clash with Barnsley at the DW Stadium. The Englishman has been a constant part of the Latics side this season, with the recently relegated side looking to gain a place in the play-offs for this season.

However, without Watson, who made 24 league appearances since his broken leg yesterday, that dream could well be in trouble. The Lancashire side are sitting 4 points off the play-offs in 7th, and with a game in hand on 6th-placed Reading, but the Championship has been as competitive as ever, and Ben Watson is just the sort of advantage some teams need in such a difficult league. The 28-year-old has made over 120 appearances for The Latics since joining them from Crystal Palace in 2009, and has become a fan favourite, largely down to his late winner in last season’s FA Cup Final at Wembley, against a Manchester City side then managed by Roberto Mancini, who was sacked days later.
