Leverkusen came into this match knowing that a win would see Die Werkself extend their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to 15 points.

This was due to Bayern Munich’s 3-1 defeat at VfB Stuttgart on Saturday.

Frankfurt, meanwhile, were looking to strengthen their position inside the top six.

Xabi Alonso’s side took an early lead thanks to a stunning strike from Granit Xhaka, only for Hugo Ekitike to evade the visitors’ backline and convert a Fares Chaibi cross.

However, a Patrik Schick header on the stroke of half-time restored the champions’ lead.

An Exequiel Palacios penalty and a goal from substitute Jeremie Frimpong, finishing a terrific counter-attack, saw their side assert their dominance.

Victor Boniface added a fifth from the spot late on - his third goal in 2024 - to cap off a routine win for ‘Meisterkusen’.

There may have been no drama this time around, but Leverkusen win yet again and they’re one step closer to that invincible treble.

Frankfurt - A distance behind the top 5

Eintracht Frankfurt came into this game four points inside the top six.

With Freiburg not far behind them, a result for Die Adler would have all but confirmed their place in the UEFA Europa League for next season.

But while the gulf between Bayer Leverkusen and the entire rest of the Bundesliga has been huge, this result highlighted both how good Leverkusen are and how far off the top sides Frankfurt are.

Niels Nkounkou and Ansgar Knauff made silly errors when conceding those penalties.

Kevin Trapp also didn’t exactly cover himself in glory in this game, particularly when trying to keep out Schick’s header.

Such errors have been a rarity for teams like Leverkusen this season; Lukas Hradecky in particular made some top saves in this match.

Dino Toppmöller’s side also could’ve had more goals but squandered their chances. They had eight more shots than the visitors.

Now 15 points behind Borussia Dortmund and 18 points away from the top four, this resulted highlighted how much work Frankfurt have left to do.

Leverkusen can win in style

When a team wraps up a league title as early as Bayer Leverkusen did, it can be hard for those teams to stay motivated.

But Xabi Alonso has done an excellent job in keeping his Werkself side driven, with such an historic achievement at the tip of their fingers.

With a DFB-Pokal final against Kaiserslautern to come, two Bundesliga matches remaining and one foot in the Europa League final, the prospect of going an entire season unbeaten may well be a reality.

The side from the BayArena have garnered a reputation for snatching late goals throughout the season, keeping this streak alive.

But this game was a reminder that on their day, Leverkusen need no luck.

They can truly tear teams apart, even without Alonso in the dugout.

Could Frankfurt drop out of the top 6?

Frankfurt have been in the top six since December. Their defeat to Leverkusen last time out on matchday 15 left them eighth and that was the last time they weren’t in the top six.

Having a four-point lead with two games to go gives Die Adler a good chance of securing Europa League football for next season.

But Frankfurt still have to play Borussia Mönchengladbach away and more importantly, RB Leipzig at home.

Meanwhile Freiburg host Heidenheim next week and go to relegation-threatened Union Berlin on the final day.

Toppmöller’s side will certainly need to play better if they are to avoid falling into the Conference League play-off spot.

Adam Hlozek is quite the talent

Prior to Leverkusen’s trip to Deutsche Bank Park, Adam Hlozek had made just four Bundesliga starts.

But Xabi Alonso rotated and it’s fair to say that it paid off.

Hlozek was the star for Die Werkself. The Czech talent grabbed three assists, including two great crosses for Schick and Frimpong.

He thrived in that inside-left role, while the likes of Schick, Odilon Koussounou and Nathan Tella, who haven’t seen an abundance of football this term, also fared well.

Alonso has a whole squad he can rely upon and although this was arguably their toughest test remaining, a performance like that will only increase confidence ahead of their final few games.
