Arsenal maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a convincing 6-1 victory over Southampton. The Saints are yet to register a single point this season.

The game was won in the first-half, with Arsenal four goals to the good inside 35 minutes.

A Jos Hooiveld own goal opened the scoring before Lukas Podolski curled in a costless-kick. Gervinho thumped in Arsenal's third shortly after, and a Nathaniel Clyne own goal made it four.

Danny Fox capitalised on a Wojciech Szczesny mistake to pull one back for the Saints before half-time.

In the second-half Arsenal eased up but still added to the scoreline through Gervinho and substitute Theo Walcott.

The Gooners looked in the groove today, especially in the first-half, with costless flowing movement in the final third causing Southampton countless problems.

Arsene Wenger's men move up to third place whilst Southampton remain rooted to the bottom of the table without a point.

Arsenal were in control from the whistle and enjoyed lots of early possession in the Southampton half. Kieran Gibbs became a constant outlet down the left and it was his low shot that was inadvertently bundled in by Jos Hooiveld.

The lead was doubled when Podolski dispatched a 25-yard costless-kick with a fearsome strike. Kelvin Davies in the Saints goal seemed to have taken up a poor position in relation to his wall, but the quality of the costless-kick cannot be denied.

Gervinho who had come into the Arsenal side for the mis-firing Giroud was enjoying the costlessdom of playing in a central attacking position. The Ivorian was linking well with Cazorla and was influential in every Arsenal attack. His hard-work was rewarded when he benefited from substitute Yoshida's poor positioning and ran unchecked into the space before drilling home his first of the game.

Two minutes later and it was game over. Gibbs again got himself into the Southampton box and saw his drilled cross deflect in off the toe of Nathaniel Clyne. The Saints defender can count himself desperately unlucky.

Arsenal were aiming for their fourth consecutive clean sheet before kick-off. Wojciech Szczesny, who was replacing Vito Mannone, gifted Southampton a first-half consolation goal when he dropped a high-cross. The ball fell at the feet of Danny Fox who converted with ease on the stroke of half-time.

The second-half was a shadow of the first from Arsenal's perspective. Arsene Wenger's side dangerously took their foot of the pedal, allowing Southampton to play their own game. The Saints played with confidence and should have grabbed a second through Ricky Lambert.

The Saints made a fight of it in the second-half but were pegged even further back with 20 minutes to go. Substitute Aaron Ramsey struck the inside of the post before Gervinho mopped-up the rebound from 2 yards out. Ramsey was desperately unlucky after he showed nimble footwork in the box before his shot hit the woodwork.

Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott were thrown into the action late on and it was the latter who completed the Saint's demise with a late strike. The former Southampton man showed respect in his lack of celebration.

Arsenal cruised to victory today and showed that they can be clinical from all departments, including the bench. The Gooners were costless-flowing, and reliably focused in possession, yet Arsene Wenger will be desperately disappointed in conceding a fourth consecutive clean sheet.

For Southampton, the fixture list hasn't been kind for their Premier League honeymoon period but it's yet another match where they have failed to pick up points. What will be more worrying for Nigel Adkins is that his side failed to to offer any resistance today, conceding heavily once again.
